Precious Adesina- 1000WIDesign Study Team Lead

Ingressive for Good partnered with Geneza School of Design to help 1000 women build skills and careers in design. During the training, we realized the need and benefits of study buddies to better help the women learn and complete their courses. So we created study groups. At the end of the program, we recorded over 70% completions. Adesina Precious Oyindamola tells us about her experience leading a study group, the impact she made and the impact it had on her.

“My name is Adesina Precious Oyindamola, a chemistry undergraduate of Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA); Thanks to Ingressive for Good, I am also a UI designer.

Growing up, I was always curious about a lot of things. For example, how the combination of primary colors gives secondary colors, as well as the blending compatibility of colors, I  thought I was going to be great at painting. As a fashion enthusiast and a lover of art, I thought UI/UX design catches my interest the most in my journey of transition to tech.

When this ASUU strike commenced around February, I decided to apply for the I4G 1000 WID training. However, when the selection process started, I got on the waiting list. I felt like it was a partial breakfast. But guess who got accepted a few days later! Yeahhh! Me!!  I was very excited that I posted on all my social media pages immediately.

I believe that, as much as leading is a duty, it also breeds responsibility. That is the summation of my experience leading Group 32. “Easy” is not an adjective that describes it, “challenging” sounds better. The most challenging task was getting responses from my teammates. Very few people would respond when a question is being asked, some team members just give cold responses, and just 1 or 2 people eased that position for me at times.

I learned how to delegate tasks, take leads on projects, and carry people along while diligently performing my tasks. As a design student, I learned a lot of things, from manipulating a shape to masking, grids, design system, iconography, wireframing, also prototyping, and a lot more.

Learning design made me understand the application of creativity and analytical abilities, including how people understand and navigate apps. In addition, for every app I open now, the UI is the first thing that catches my attention.

I’m excited about the journey moving forward. I know that there’s so much out there in store for me. “
