“My name is Omodolapo Barakat Babatunde, a 25 year old Product Designer with special interest in volunteering, photography, surfing the net and reading. While growing up, I knew that the environment in Nigeria could be challenging and I learnt to utilize every opportunity I got and make lemonades out of lemons thrown at me. I encountered I4G at a critical juncture. I was considering a change in career and was overwhelmed with information and distractions were just as many. I was self-learning on YouTube and others. I soon realized that I needed a tribe that would help me better understand myself, what I wanted and what to do about it.
I wanted to learn prototyping, design systems and basically all the rudiments of UI/UX design. I stumbled on a Twitter post talking about the I4G Scholarship and yes, I applied and got selected, and as they say, the rest is history.”
“Apart from learning from one of the best in the industry, the training exposed me to African Youths in Tech who were just as passionate as I was. The support was amazing. All the things that I learnt from this training; design-related and others, shaped me into becoming better in other aspects of my life.
After the program, I transitioned to a better role successfully. From being an Open source volunteer to being a product designer and now, heading the product design team at a US based company. In addition to all of this, I’m giving back to the community by teaching and mentoring newbies in the design space who need my help.
It wasn’t all rosy but it’s safe to say that the training out of other activities including putting in the work and leaving my comfort zone got me here. Special thanks to I4G for this opportunity. You guys rock!”
