Ingressive for Good partnered with Geneza School of Design to help 1000 women build skills and careers in design. During the training, we realized the need and benefits of study buddies to better help the women learn and complete their courses. So we created study groups. At the end of the program, we recorded over 70% completions. Fowosere Mojisola tells us about her experience leading a study group, the impact she made and the impact it had on her.
“My name is Fowosere Mojisola. Before I4G, I was into digital marketing and hoping to fully transition into a career in tech. I applied for the 1000WID training because design has always been on the top of my career options. Seeing the congratulatory email in my inbox was exciting, to say the least. It was my first step towards learning an in-demand tech skill.
I applied to lead a study group mostly because I wanted to challenge myself; see if I could handle taking my own course, helping others through theirs while juggling my sometimes full-time side gigs. Was it easy? Definitely not. But I got to connect with and learn from other designers. Leading a group also meant that I had a whole team of accountability partners.
As a group leader; I learnt how to connect with people, which I must admit wasn’t my strongest suit. I also learned to pay close attention to my team members’ progress, listen and encourage them when needed.
Learning design has taught me to; constantly challenge myself, improve upon even my best ideas, derive inspiration from other people’s works and be empathetic; you can’t design a product that works without first putting yourself in your users’ shoes.
It’s interesting to note that I applied for the Graphics Design track but when I got UI/UX, I took that as a sign from the universe and ran with it. And I’m so glad I did.”
