Ingressive for Good

Dare Praise Moleri- 1000WIDesign Study Team Lead

Ingressive for Good partnered with Geneza School of Design to help 1000 women build skills and careers in design. During the training, we realized the need and benefits of study buddies to better help the women learn and complete their courses. So we created study groups. At the end of the program, we recorded over 70% completions. Dare Praise Moleri tells us about her experience leading a study group, the impact she made and the impact it had on her.

“I am Dare Praise Moleri, a Graphic Designer.  I am very passionate about design, it is an area my energy flows well in. Although I had knowledge about design, I wanted to know more. Therefore, when I came across the Ingressive for Good 1000 Women in Design Scholarship, I applied.

I remember having a conversation with a Brand Identity Designer and I felt like there was a lot to know about design. I told him that I wished I could go to a Design School. He had told me that there are few trusted design training platforms like Geneza Brand.  Fortunately,  I was selected for the scholarship. I was called one day and asked some questions over the phone. Not too long after, I received a congratulatory message and was able to begin the design courses. It was really a great opportunity. It was like a desire being fulfilled.

During the course of the training, there was a call put forth for women to be team leads. I saw this as an opportunity to use my administrative skills and I indicated an interest. It was an interesting journey. I had to encourage my team members and ask about their levels of progress.

There was a group for team leads where suggestions were brought up on how to engage our various groups and get responses from our team members. The amazing thing about leading my team was that, I was not only leading people in my track, I also supported people from other design tracks. The team members that had challenges reached out to me, and I proffered a solution. When there were questions I couldn’t answer, I either asked it on the Team Leads Group or researched it.

There was this particular lady on the team. She explained the challenge she was facing to me, and I had to keep encouraging her. Although I was not in her track, she would ask me questions relating to her track. I had to keep answering her questions. There were times I had to research in order to properly answer her question. She was able to finish her training and was grateful for my support.

It was really a privilege being a team lead. I would say that you have to learn to accept responsibilities to be a leader. You may not know your capabilities to empower others until you are faced with a responsibility.

You don’t have to get it all figured out at first when you set out. As the need arises, you will find out that you are getting equipped to deliver exceptionally. Although it might stretch you, it’s definitely worth it in the end.

Before now, I designed with my smartphone, but this training taught me how to use Adobe Photoshop. I was able to learn more about the basics of design, tools in Adobe Photoshop, and I was also able to do some projects like Sport design, Magazine design, Designing a Nike Flyer, Designing for Alpha brand all with Adobe Photoshop.

Sample of the work I did during the program

After the training, I got a job where I was assigned the role of a Graphic Designer. I also got an opportunity to teach people about design. I know that this is just the beginning, and I hope to do more in the world of design.

I really want to appreciate Ingressive for Good and Geneza School of Design for this great opportunity granted to me to improve my design skills.”
