How I Created a Job for Myself- Karimah Lawal

In honor of In honor of International Women’s Day, we celebrate women who are pushing boundaries in their fields. One such woman is Lawal Karimah. Read about how she created a job for herself after she struggled to find one.

“My name is Lawal Karimah, and I had always envisioned making a difference in my community as an industrial chemist. I worked tirelessly and graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Ekiti State University in Nigeria. However, the reality hit me hard when I struggled to find a job that matched my qualifications. Despite my academic success, I was always asked what additional skills I possessed. It was a difficult and frustrating challenge, not just for me but for many Nigerian students in similar situations. Some fell into depression, while others, like me, decided to explore alternative career paths.

My passion for education and desire to help others led me to discover the world of technology, where I founded Skillsard, an edtech platform that provides professional courses and skills to students across Africa. Skillsard connects instructors with students through digital technology, providing a self-paced and high-quality learning experience. What sets Skillsard apart is that it empowers both instructors and students to earn an income. Instructors can teach and monetize their skills through the platform, while students can earn additional income through the affiliate program. This creates a sustainable cycle of knowledge transfer, income generation, and economic growth.

My struggles inspired me to create a platform that addresses the lack of workplace competencies required in the corporate world. Skillsard provides opportunities for self-development and employment for students of all backgrounds, regardless of their academic qualifications. Through Skillsard, I aspire to create a limitless community of entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and leaders who can use their skills to better their own lives, the lives of others in their community, and the world at large. Skillsard is not just a platform for learning but a movement that is changing the lives of African youth and paving the way for a brighter future.”
